When I was young I used to read a book called “Bestevaer” over and over. Bestevaer is Dutch and loosely translated means a mix of “best sailor/father”. The book is about the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter who was in many sea battles with the English back in the day and gave them a few good thrashings!
But what appealed to me was that, not only was he a brilliant sailor, he was also very good for all his other sailors in the fleet and they all loved him for it.
I was a captain on a ship for a few years and I also tried to be good for my crew. I think it worked because they were all sad when I told them I was quitting my captain’s job.
Anyway, the moral of this story is that if you ever will have people working for you, at times you may have to be stern but you should always treat them fairly and be good to them.
My favourite book character was Pippi Langstrumpf created by Astrid Lindgren. This girl, even though in difficult personal situation, demonstrates her independence, curiosity and kindness.
