Hey Freddo
Working as an engineer doesn’t really affect your social life any more than any other job. Although sometimes if a big project is due you might have to work late or weekends, but usually that’s not very often.
The hours are fairly flexible depending on where you work (I can even work from home some days!) and you get the weekends off. When I was working on my PhD the hours were much longer, so its nice now being able to relax on the weekends without having to think about work!
I’m not going to sugar coat it. When you are studying to become an engineer you social life can be very limited in the last 2 years. It’s like this with most challenging degrees.
However, now that I am working, I actually have a better work/life balance than a lot of my friends that work in finance or business!
You make fantastic friends as an engineer because you can work very long hours with your team. So the social side of work can be much better than most.
