It depends on what we are trying to do with the lasers on any given day. If new lasers were just made, I might test 20-30 of them to check if all the designs worked. Then once I know they are ok, I would pick 1 or 2 and do some intensive tests on those to see how they are perform.
At the moment we are trying to do some new physics with a particular set of lasers, so we are focussing all our attention on getting those to work the right way.
Recently I designed a chip that had over 19,000 lasers on it! It was really cool 🙂
