• Question: what is the most fun thing you have ever made as a engineer?

      The most fun thing I ever made was a machine I had to design and build for an engineering project in school. The goal was to move 10 marbles from one point to another…but it had to be done on something that would fit on a table. To do this I designed a pump that would inflate a balloon and lift the marbles up inside a small tube. Then the marbles rolled down a ramp and did a 360 degree loop before landing in a box. I had a laser in the box that would activate a siren when the marbles arrived (kinda like an alarm system that they would use in a bank)…it was really cool! It combined engineering and electronics and was really fun to work on.

      I helped a student to design a test stand for a mini jet engine. We can fire up the engine (without letting it take off) and find out how well it performs. When I say “mini” it’s about the size of a big water bottle but it is very, very LOUD.

      I don’t make things – I spend most of my time in an office making decisions and deciding whats the best thing we can be doing so that when you fly you are safe and secure. This can be fun sometimes when you have a new challenge and you’re working with a team of people to figure out the answer. Like at school sometimes we have a laugh and a joke.
