Modern jet airplanes are built of composite materials. You need light weight so that the airlines can use less fuel and this makes it cheaper to fly but the aircraft needs to be able to cope with the stresses and strains placed on it. So aircraft are now made with carbon fibre reinforced plastics, alluminium and titanium.
