  I was working on my PhD and was looking at next generation amplifiers (as light from lasers travels it gets weaker and you need to amplify to make it strong). I realised that it is very difficult to correctly tell the exact wavelength that the light is at without HUGE equipment (we’re talking meters in size) but something smaller is needed in real life. Hence I set about making the big stuff much smaller. It could fit in a matchbox now!
