As I’m a project manager, I would say the hardest thing is all the stuff that is not really engineering related! I work with people from a lot of different countries, so sometimes the different languages can be difficult.

Similar to Catherine, the hardest thing about engineering is non-engineering related. Dealing with people, especially when things cost money is always tricky. You may have a solution but no one ever wants to pay for it. Explaining difficult technical things to non-engineers can prove difficult when all they care about is how much its going to cost!

Financial management. To keep a big research centre going we need to find millions of euros of funding per year.. and this is tricky

Finding something that no one else has done to put into my PhD. It’s not just something new, it has to be something worthwhile and interesting (for me). My work isn’t just engineering, there’s a lot of chemistry involved which is a subject I swore I would never use again after 1st year science in college.
