Engineering is all that can save us.
Look at the strong economies – Germany etc. Most of their politicians are engineers!
Most of ours are primary school teachers. (Sorry teachers)

I’m Chair of the Institution of Engineering and Technology in Ireland and all I see is that industry is really booming again. Particularly energy, biomedical and Space. A part of the Rosetta mission was designed in Ireland!

That’s a good answer John, I agree with totally that. Engineers in Ireland are the cornerstone of our economy. Whether they are working in energy to offset expensive imports or working in manufacturing making many products for export to other counties. Ireland now has many companies that worked hard during the economic crash to develop new export markets for themselves. Now that the economy is starting to recover these companies are busier than ever supplying their both the Irish and international customers.

Absolutely. Engineers come up with very clever and ingenious designs and solutions. We’re lucky that here in Ireland we have some quality research like that that John mentioned, biomedical and space. I’ve a friend who is a Rocket Engineer who helped secure a €250,000 grant from ESA (European Space Agency) to reduce the vibrations of rockets launching into space. Also, Ireland is one of the leading locations for the pharmaceutical industry in Europe.

I know a lot of the tech industry has their HQ in Ireland due to the tax loopholes, but there are a lot of engineers working in Google, Intel, Amazon, Twitter etc..

Did you see the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. It depicts pre and post industrial Britain. Technology revolutionised industry and catalysed the economy. This industrialisation was all done through engineering. We still have that legacy that wealth and growth is driven by technology and industry. Perhaps not the heavy industry of the Victorian industry but Ireland is good at the higher value add goods and services. Also remember that the quality of life that you enjoy and even take for granted is all on the basis of engineering. Transport roads cars food energy communications internet and even sky TV not possible without engineering so yes… Engineering can help us out of the problem.

We are in a technology revolution at the moment – all new products and technologies that are coming out are developed by engineers. These products generate money for the economy and create jobs. On the other hand, for example, all of us here are working on ways to save/create electricity to reduce the future costs of this, which also effects the economy. If we spend less we have more money!

In relation to the economy, things are getting better in Ireland, and I think we will see a big improvement in the next few years. We just have to make sure that we don’t make the same mistakes we did before.
