I wanted to do something that would keep me busy every day and keep me happy to solve problems. There’s lots of jobs like accounting that have maths but are the same thing over and over. Engineering is always new!

Asking questions, lots and lots of questions. I’m not naturally smart, I tend to forget a lot of things. Asking questions from different types of people about something you are interested in (and they have knowledge of) is a great way to learn. The more you know the easier it is to be an engineer. For instance I was really bad at programming but I sat down with one or two people who really help me understand it and now I’m not afraid of it.

I was always interested in how things worked and taking things apart. I remember setting up our first computer we ever had, logging on to the internet the first time and my first mobile phone and thinking how cool all those things were – and it was engineers who developed them. I probably knew from the age of 14 or 15 that it was what I wanted to do.
