I grew tired of milking cows on the family farm and getting up at ridiculous times to calve cows. Engineering looked like an exciting contrast with lots of opportunities to do things I wanted to. I wanted to invent but to also make a difference. There’s so many different types of engineering and so many chances to move between them.

Just like John I milked many cows and even went as far as agricultural university. That was all before I realise that agriculture just wasn’t me.
I loved working on machines in our workshop at home. I also loved tech drawing in school and wanted to do more of that so I changed courses to Mechanical engineering.

No farming background from me – I was always interested in how things worked, or pulling things apart of they weren’t working. I also get bored of doing the same thing over and over again and like to keep things interesting, so engineering seemed like the right choice!

By process of elimination. The only subject I really enjoyed was physics and my career guidance councillor suggested that I might be suitable for engineering, so that’s what I chose. I didn’t really give it too much thought at the time.

Well… I thought I was going to be an electrician but I just kept going at university and ended up as an engineer!
