I am a research scientist at Tyndall national institute. It is an amazing place for high-tech making devices that are used every day. For example we develop lasers for sending signals over the internet. We build very small LEDs that can be used for very efficient displays such as TVs, mobile phones or for the metaverse (Oculus rift for example)
-
My Typical Day: I cycle to and from work and get going on planning the activities, meeting with the engineers to discuss the work and the results.
-
What I'd do with the money: Build demonstration devices to show how important light is

Id like to help people appreciate the properties of light and how it can benefit us. We use light from lasers every day when we are on the internet. The lasers are made from atoms in the periodic table. They are in the form of crystals where every atom is aligned. The crystals are designed and made by humans – they are not found in nature. Depending on the design of the atoms these crystals and be used to generate all colours of light in the visible and infrared and ultraviolet parts of the spectrum.
