In ESA I have been working as a Structures Engineer for 9 1/2 years, before that I was working in the Space Industry for nearly 6 years and a further 2 1/2 in the Aircraft Industry.
I’ve been working in the world of both performing & science for over 8 years now. But before that, I was working exclusively as an actor for 5 years, and then before that I was working exclusively as a scientist for 6 years, and before that I was working and studying as an engineer for 8 years.
I’m still very new to this industry. I’ve only been working within it for 1 and a half years! Although I might consider this 3 years if I was to include my internship and some freelance analysis I did while searching for a job.
Im my area. Thats hard. I started work in 1987 worked as an electronic engineer for 3 years then did 3 years as a programmer at european space agency. Then I did a PhD. Afterwards I worked on interpreting satellite photos so like a mix of engineering and geography. Now I do management. So I just zig zagged from one thing to another
It’s about 20 years I’m working in Space but I’ve worked as an engineer in many different areas of space. Let’s see if you can see how many different types of engineers exist when working in the Space area!!
When I was a Young Graduate Trainee in Holland in 1996, I worked one year as a Microelectronics Engineer for space applications.
I worked as a Spacecraft Assembly Integration & Verification (AIV) Engineer building a small spacecraft to launch on a rocket.
I worked as a Ground Segment Integration Engineer putting together the system needed on Earth to help control the ENVISAT satellite when it was in Space
I worked as a Spacecraft Operations Engineer preparing to help the Rosetta spacecraft work after it separated from the rocket
I worked as a Science Operations Engineer to help operate science instruments on the INTEGRAL Satellite
I was a Science Operations Engineer and System Engineer to put together the system to operate the science instruments on the Herschel Satellite. I then became deputy operations manager.
I became a Development manager then Science Operations Manager to help the Rosetta spacecraft instruments work when they were flying around the comet.
