• Question: What advice would you give young people about engineering and would you advise them to do a job in engineering?

      Hi there, my advice is that engineering has such a wide variety of specialisations to choose from e.g. civil, electrical, space, operations, etc, that you are spoiled for choice.

      Engineering will challenge you, it will push you always to be able to deal with problems/issues that arise, it requires you sometimes to be logical, sometimes methodical, always thorough.

      Engineering is not for everyone, expect it to have a mathematical part to it or indeed science part to it e.g. physics, biology, chemistry etc. But remember that just because you might not like maths or science doesn’t mean that you won’t like engineering.

      Remember that you should choose a subject that motivates and excites you, where you are willing to work long hours to see the results coming, maybe for a small salary at the beginning but which gets larger over time as you gain more experience.

      If you have an analytical mind and are curious about how things work then you might be interested in engineering. It is very varied covering options like electrical, electronic, computers , mechanical , civil which is buildings bridges , etc materials, genetics …. really there is a huge variety. You need to be ok at maths and science subjects so as not to struggle when studying it. But my main advice is do something that you really like or fascinates you as you wont find that like hard work!
