Hi Catherine, when I worked in a small company, on a small spacecraft, I actually with another colleague, got to build a spacecraft and test it. Most of the time the projects I work on are so big that there are lots of people involved, so my role would be more on the design side, so that was very exciting!

One of the most interesting things I have done is to examine one year of satellite photos of the earth, with pictures taken every day and identified all the vegetation fires in those images. Fires burn in the African savanna, in teh Northern territories of Australia, on teh ege of the Amazon rainforest and across much of Asia. We alsohave firest is southern Europe in Summer. I could see all these in teh satellite photographs. I was able to count the number of fires and then from that make an estimation of how much Carbon Dioxide was emitted from teh fires. this carbon dioxide contributes to global warming. It was the first time a study like this had been done. It was pretty interesting to be the one who did it.

I’ve been involved in helping to put the Philae lander on the surface of a comet. Certainly one of the most interesting things I’ve done in my work in the last few years. But then if you only had one interesting thing every few years your life would be boring so I get involved in many other areas which fascinate me.

I’m still new to the industry and haven’t been involved in a lot at this stage. I think that the most interesting thing I’ve been involved in would have to be the internship I did with Bio-regenerative life support systems. That was right up there with my biggest interest in the space industry and was a great experience to be right at the beginning of it all at that particular lab.
