They’re pretty easy to assemble when all the materials arrive, but to go from idea to ready for launch is very difficult. We only have one chance with it, and it needs to last a very long time without a hitch, so we test every last detail, and change the design a lot.
If the antennas don’t work it’s game over because can’t send commands and can’t receive images/data. If the solar panels or batteries don’t work, no power. If the cameras break, if the electronics overheat, if we hit something in the soil, if a wheel doesn’t work properly, all very bad problems so need to make sure its perfect when sending because won’t get a second chance to fix it.
