Sometimes! I work in astrophysics and astronomy, which means most of our work is done at night. For example, next week I’ll be going to Teide Observatory in Tenerife and using a telescope on a mountain for a week. I’ll have to stay up all night to observe. It’s so tiring but lots of fun! In terms of my day-to-day work, I don’t often have to stay up late, unless there’s a deadline. But we’re usually well prepared for deadlines!
In my job I try plan out my work for each week and get everything done between 8am and 4pm. But in college I did do a few all nighters on projects. I don’t recommend it 🙂
Yes.
Often there are deadlines to finish some project, or your bit of a project.
And if you don’t finish in time, it can be bad news, for you and for others.
Ideally, you try to have everything done in good time.
But in the real world you can run out of time, and then you end up working very long hours, sometimes through the night. But it’s something you try to avoid.
No, my work days are long and I need to sleep. There are certain phases of the project where the work demand increases e.g. during launch campaign we work 6 day weeks on 10-12 hour shifts. If we have a tight launch window we may have to also work Sunday but we try to avoid as launch campaign is a very stressful time and it is quite dangerous to work with the launcher and fueled spacecraft while not fully alert.
