I worked on launchers for many years and I decided that the complexity of satellites was more interesting to me. The sub systems of a satellite are more complex and are more technically advanced than those of launchers.

Don’t tell the rocket guys this!

I think satellites are really cool because it’s like sending a very capable human to space, to see things we can’t see from earth. The technology on these satellites is fantastic and much more capable than a human. Satellites give us a window to space to see light we can’t see from earth, for example UV, X-ray and Gamma-rays. I want to research more of space, so that’s why I like working on satellites!

When the first Irish satellite was announced by some other people in UCD, I was not involved, but I was very interested, and offered to help.
Gradually I have got more and more involved in different aspects, or I should say, students of mine have got more and more involved, as I am only supervising their work. They are doing the real work.
Why? Because it is an exciting project, very interesting, and we are all learning a lot in having to design, build, test and launch this satellite.
