I’m an Engineer November 2014: Who’s taking part?

Schools taking part in I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here

I’m an Engineer is coming to Ireland for the first time during Science Week this November.

From the 10th to 21st November, 10 engineers will be competing for school students’ votes in two weeks of fast-paced live chats and questions on everything from renewable energy, to robots, and pizza toppings.

For the latest news and announcements, find us on Twitter, @IAEGMOOH, and follow the hashtag, #IAEIE.

Let’s meet the scientists and schools taking part…

Energy Zone

The Engineers

Raymond Alcorn | University College Cork

Figuring our how to get our energy in the future.

Laura Tobin | University College Dublin

As an optical engineer, I work in the dark shining different types of light (Xenon, LED, lasers) onto different types of materials to see what happens – e.g. making holograms or shining lasers on different dyes that I use in my biomimetic solar cells.

John Ging | EirGrid

I study the connection of customers such as wind farms or factories to the power system to figure out if it is safe or possible to do so.

Catherine Conaghan | IES Ltd

I manage large European engineering projects that develop brand new ways to save energy in buildings using our company’s building design and simulation software.

Ashley Culbert | Coillte

I help Ireland to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by managing the development of wind farms to generate renewable electricity.

The Schools

  • Santa Sabina, Dublin
  • Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Kerry
  • Newport NS, Mayo
  • Mount Sackville Secondary School, Dublin
  • Gortnahoe N.S., Tipperary
  • Colaiste Bhaile Chlair, Galway

Kelvin Zone | A general engineering zone

The Engineers

Lisa Phelan | Boston Scientific

Bioengineering man made aortic heart valves using metal, plastic and cow tissue, they go inside people’s hearts for years, I am living in California for 6 months leaving about how to make it in galway!

Katie Mahon | BCD Engineering

I design & 3D model pressure vessels & tanks for drink & drugs companies (pharmacy drugs of course!), which are then built in our metal workshop.

David Taylor | Trinity College Dublin

I’m an engineer studying the human body: how to fix it and how to make it work better.

Colin Keogh | University College Dublin

Engineer researching advanced energy technologies (Solar panels, Biomass fuels, Algae/Seaweed Fuels) and 3D Printing technologies.

Caoimhe O’Neill | Queen’s University Belfast

Wood grown in Ireland is not very strong for building big structures so I am trying to see if I can make it stronger by gluing different types of materials on to it and then testing it in the lab to see if I was right or wrong.
