This March, during Engineers Week, we will be running three different themed zones. Read about them below, or if you want to jump straight to the application:

Energy Zone
Energy is vital to our modern world. Some fridges can consume the same amount of energy as 25 large power plants produce every year. That’s a lot of energy just for keeping your food cool. And Google uses around 0.013% of the world’s energy – enough to continuously power 200,000 homes (remember that when you’re next googling your homework!). Where does all this energy come from, and how can we use it better? In this zone engineers might be designing sustainable energy systems, extracting fossil fuels in more environmentally friendly ways, creating innovative projects to reduce carbon emissions, or better understanding the nature of energy itself.
The Energy Zone is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is for primary school students
Health Zone
Our body is a little bit like a machine: our bones form a robust structure, which is moved by muscles. Our digestive system is in charge of taking up energy from food and the blood stream delivers it to where it is needed. We even have a very sophisticated waste management system, and all of this machinery is controlled by a central computer: our brain. Biomedical engineers apply their design and problem solving skills to biology and medicine to improve healthcare. In this zone you might meet an engineer using micro-implants to look inside our bodies or someone designing robotic artificial body parts.

Space Zone
The use of space is only possible thanks to engineering. Engineers design and build spacecraft that will map and explore distant planets and stars, helping us understand more about the universe. In this zone, engineers might be designing spacecraft that map and explore distant planets and stars, helping us understand more about the universe. Or they could be using data from orbiting satellites to monitor the logging of rain-forests.
