I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 4th – Friday 15th March 2019 during Engineers Week, connecting school students with engineers across Ireland.
We are running three themed zones this March. Scroll down to read about them, or head straight to the application form:
- Teachers apply by 21st January: iaeie.ddev.site/teachers
- Engineers apply by 28th January: iaeie.ddev.site/engineer-apply
Health Zone
Our body is a little bit like a machine: our bones form a robust structure, which is moved by muscles. Our digestive system is in charge of taking up energy from food and the blood stream delivers it to where it is needed. We even have a very sophisticated waste management system, and all of this machinery is controlled by a central computer: our brain.
Biomedical engineers apply their design and problem solving skills to biology and medicine to improve healthcare. Some of the most well-known biomedical applications are micro-implants, complex equipment to look inside our bodies or robotic artificial body parts.
The Health Zone is supported by Wellcome.
Production Zone
Have you ever looked at a car, or a chocolate bar, or your computer mouse and wondered: How is that made? Well the engineers in the Production Zone could be able to tell you.
In this zone the people who engineer the machines and processes that produce nearly everything in our everyday lives will be coming up with the goods. They might manufacture medical devices, smart machines or microelectronic components, develop autonomous systems for factories or be researching new advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing.
The Production Zone is funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
Space Zone
Look up at night and you will see a whole lot of space out there. With less than 70 years of sending things into space under our belts, the future up above is almost limitless. And space has huge impacts on how we live our lives down here.
In this zone, engineers might be designing spacecraft that map and explore distant planets and stars, helping us understand more about the universe. Or they could be using data from orbiting telescopes to monitor the logging of rainforests. They could even be making sure the satellite that carries your phone signal survives its shaky trip into orbit.
The Space Zone is funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
