Hey Eeyore,
I didn’t even think about being an engineer until a career guidance councillor in school suggested it to me when I was in sixth year. I didn’t really know what engineers do. That’s one of the reasons I’m taking part in I’m an Engineer… I wish I had engineers to talk to when I was in school.
At the age of 10 it was clear that I wanted to something related to physics, maths, engineering etc. That did not necessarily mean I wanted to become an engineer but the direction was set. The final decision for me was when I entered university.
I always loved taking things apart as a kid. It was in 2nd or 3rd year in school when my science teacher said that what engineers do. Then in 6th year I started going to an after school electronics club. That’s where I got into electronic engineering.
My first project in primary school was on cars – so I showed signs at around 7/8 if not earlier. I think engineering was my number 2 preference (behind athlete) until I was maybe 20. Everything changed after I built my first robot…
