Hi Rebecca,
I have many goals I want to achieve. I want to build the best robotics research group in the world, I want to design and develop robots that revolutionise how people grow old, to help develop Ireland into a world-leading hub of technology innovation, to be a major force in promoting and glamorising engineering… These are just some. I might not achieve all of these things but I’m going to try very hard to.
I set many short goals over a period of a year. These short goals are generally accumulative – once I achieve one, it brings me closer to achieving the next. I work really hard to reach these goals and when I hit one, I make sure to celebrate it. If I miss a target, or I fail to reach a goal which happens alot – I get over it, try to learn from it and keep working hard.
My lifetime goal is space exploration, being a space explorer (i.e. an astronaut). My motivation dream is Mars and my short-term goal is postdoc (the position that you have when you will complete your PhD).
I believe that we have a lot to explore both on Earth and in space. The knowledge we can gain through exploration can enhance and improve the quality of life on Earth, above all for medical treatment and diagnosis.
I realise the longer I am working in IT how sad it is that so few girls work with me! My lifetime goal is to do everything I can to encourage more girls to study computer science and take up many of the different types of jobs in IT! I would love to see 50:50 boys to girls in IT in my lifetime. I think its a really cool job lots of girls have missed out on because they don’t know anything about it.
