Cathal Ó Murchú answered on 10 Mar 2017:

A PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy, and in Ireland it is the highest level of education you can be awarded. It is awarded for making a new contribution to the ‘body of knowledge’. Which is another way of saying that you need to come up with a new idea or way of doing something, and if it is original enough you will be made a Doctor of Philosophy in whatever topic, so for me it would be in Civil Engineering
