Plastic can take up to 1000 years to disintegrate. Scientists are looking into developing bacteria which can break down plastics more quickly. They are also developing biodegradable plastics which disintegrate quicker and more easily like PLA.

Plastics live on forever, they never disintegrate. This is why single-use plastics are so harmful for the environment.
