As an engineer, I first started building robots during the time I worked in the National Rehabilitation Hospital. I didn’t know much about robotics then, but I was working on a couple of projects where it turned that a robot could be designed to solve some problem that a paralysed person had. One was a robot to pick up things that had fallen on the ground. Another was a robot to draw things on paper. I learned quite a lot from building those prototypes, so when I became a lecturer in TU Dublin one of the things they asked me to teach was robotics. It’s a great subject to teach to students because people get very enthusiastic about it and love to see their robots come to life. After I had been teaching it for a few years, I began to do research to develop new kinds of robot technology. I also now run robotics workshops for beginners to show people what it’s like to be an engineer.
