A lot of my work in biomedical engineering has been about human-machine interfaces – the way that a person controls or interacts with a computer or other machine. Common examples include a keyboard, computer mouse or touch screen on a phone. I’m interested in developing new ways for people to communicate with their machines, for example using eye movements or electrical signals from the body. I did my PhD in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, where I worked on ways for people to communicate if they couldn’t use a conventional interface due to a physical disability. In addition to communicating in words, I worked on ways for people to compose or perform music and also to draw pictures.
So, to answer your question, I suppose the way that I’m trying to improve quality of life is by making new ways for people to communicate or control technology more effectively.
