I have spend more than a decade in the engineering industry …and another decade now in academia. Both environments offered me a rewarding experience.
-
My Work: I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the University of Limerick (UL), teaching our future generation of engineers.

Teaching UL aeronautical engineering students about the aircraft systems and how we can design, make, maintain and operate safely aircraft, what we call airworthy aircraft. My research is mainly focused on understanding the behaviour of metals when loaded under various ways. That includes metals used in aeronautical and other types of engineering applications. An exciting part of my work involves working on metal additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing), for which we ‘print’ metal parts by using laser to ‘melt’ metal powder.
-
My Typical Day: Lots to cover in a day: teaching-writing papers-communicating with my students-doing research-etc. 24 hours is not enough
-
What I'd do with the money: Talk about aircraft, metal additive manufacturing and how our future engineers can be inspired to pursue a career in engineering!

Engage students, our future engineers, by discussing really interesting stuff we do as engineers every day …and how aircraft fly! Also, 3D printing of metals, one of the many exciting things we do in UL!
