For me my first big project was in my graduate school where we used satellite imagery to study the algae in water. When the water is polluted, or is full of food or nutrients, these little creatures like to grow and take up all the oxygen from water. It then becomes difficult for fish to survive. We studied those using satellite.
My first project in artificial intelligence was as an undergraduate, to build a lego-mindstorm robot and use logic rules to reprogram it to plan the most efficient way of going from one place to another, pick up and stack objects, avoid danger and obstacles, interact with other robots and help each other…
There was a competition at the end in the class to see what robot was more “intelligent” and we got among the top 3 (don’t remember who won though 🙂
