I grew up on a farm and I always wanted to work outside…so I though I would try to study something around water and the environment so that I might not be in an office all the time.
I was working on a water project in Brazil, and only then did I learn about low levels of access to sanitation, poor treatment of human waste and the diseases/deaths that this was causing (estimated 5,000 children per day)
I just could not believe that this problem was so huge but I had never even heard of it before – after that I started looking for jobs in this area instead. Its not so glamorous so it doesn’t get the best reception from friends/family but I really believe it to be very important (I’m hoping to convince the students who participate this week of that too)
