Yes, I would still be here. But if you asked me to pick any job in the world I would love to be paid to be a mountain biker or a surfer….. Pay me to do my hobbies and I would be happy!
But as a career, that I can build on, improve skills both technically and people skills, engineering is the one for me.
I first started out as a chemist (testing pharmaceutical drugs) and went to college in galway. i started in medical devices simply because there are so many medical companies in galway. While working in the lab I watched the engineers develop devices and then go to a hospital or animal trial with that very device. So I straight away wanted to get involved, because I was working in a small company at the time I was able to work both roles without affecting the project. From there I moved straight into Boston Scientific as a research and development engineer, 3 years later it’s going great.
It’s a great company to work for, great people and great job satisfaction.
If I hadn’t become an engineer I would probably have been an actor. I was doing a lot of acting in the drama society when I was in College and if I hadn’t got an engineering job I would probably have tried to be a professional actor. Probably a good thing that I didn’t though – acting doesn’t pay very well for most people and I don’t look much like George Clooney!
But the experience helped me a lot as an engineer, giving me confidence to make presentations in front of lots of people.
Yes, I would do it all again. An engineering degree will stand to you forever – I’m proud to be an engineer!
You don’t just learn stuff off by heart in college, it teaches you how to think, how to have the right attitude. To always ask how things work, how can something be improved, how can I find out more about this design etc.
If I see a problem with something, or if I don’t know the answer, I don’t panic! I will try find out the answer, ask other people’s opinions, and do my own research. Being an engineer is all about working with the information you have & trying to find a solution.
