I have designed a whole range of pressure vessels & tanks in my current job. This could range from 60,000 Litre silos (like the big tanks outside Bulmers in Clonmel) to tiny little tanks for pharmaceutical labs, these could be 20Litre tanks, and they often look a bit like weird saucepans.
I’ve also made the piping systems & assemblies that go with the tanks, this is almost like doing a jigsaw or making stuff with lego. You need to piece everything together so that the process through the piping works properly, but also lay it out so that an operator in the lab can reach a sample valve, or a maintenance person can reach a pump if needs to be repaired. There is less engineering calculation and more engineering design involved in piping systems.
Mostly I don’t make things…I just make a mess! I break things to see how strong they are, so that other people can make them better. Some of those things include: golf clubs; trampolines; bicycles; cars; artificial hip joints; ladders; water pipes, storage tanks, chairs….and aircraft engines
