As I am working in material engineering/science as a researcher, I don’t really make a product that you’ll see very soon in the market. Our job is to discover new materials that have the potential to be used in future electronics.

We have built a system to help the elderly live independently in their homes: it was monitoring their health and habits and focusing on preventing falls using sensor technologies and artificial intelligence. We have also done something more larger scale with sensors and AI for Smart cities: an app that dynamically suggests cyclists the less polluted path to take to go to a given place (like a green googlemap :), and the path change when traffic builds up in some roads and CO2 levels change. And users could customise their preferences (if they want short and less polluted or faster and less polluted or greener etc).

I have built a system to test control systems of optical networks; I have applied algorithms to predict the performance of optical signals traversing an optical network; I’ve also applied algorithms to classify mammographies into benign or malignant (cancer). As an engineer doing research, a big part of my job is writing scientific papers, which is the way we disseminate the work that we do to our peers.

I haven’t made it yet, but I’m trying to make a material to coat the implants that are used to fix broken bones. Hopefully I’m successful haha

I mostly code apps. Lately related to healthcare, using wearable sensors which read patients’ movement and physical condition. Before that I also wrote e.g. app that could tell you how fast you need to run in a marathon to be able to finish + hit your best time, and a game where you controlled dragons with your stress level… So all sorts of interesting stuff.
Apps or other software are of course not physical things but still need engineering: they need to be developed in a way that makes the best use of available resources (memory, data, bandwidth, time, processing power, user attention, screen space, …). -

I build a wearable system which can detect the contraction of the muscles. The peculiarity is that all the data are collected without using any electric cable, but through a conductive ink that can be printed onto the common garmets.
