• Question: Do you just help humans or do you help animals as well?

      Our products are used for the treatment of both humans and animals.
      In some cases, products intended for humans are used in the treatment of animals, while we also have some products that are specifically designed for veterinary use.

      I tend to focus on humans, but there are projects related to animals sometimes too. I think they tend to have less of a “market value” compared with medical products for humans, so companies are less likely to invest in the development of a product to help an animal.
      Did you know that a lot of medicines we give to animals are just human medicines in lower doses?

      My friend who studied biomedical engineering with me works in a company that make MRI scanners for animals!

      In my group we are focused on assisting health care in humans. But many of the advances and novel techniques we are working on could be translated into animal care as well.

      I don’t normally do work with animals, but I have supervised a couple of final-year projects that are about monitoring animal health. One was about putting a device on a cow that works a bit like a fitbit and monitoring the signal to see when the cow was sick or unwell. Another project was about using a camera to track the weight of pigs in a shed.
