Politics and getting the necessary resources to complete a task or project.
There are very few projects that I can complete without assistance from other engineering disciplines (mechanical, software, etc.).
Often, these people have different managers and different priorities, so some negotiation can be required to get assistance.
Luckily, my current team are very helpful.

Coordinate all its aspects: experiments, writing, presenting, networking… so different skills required!

All possible attempts to solve an issue that fail over and over, but one learn from those mistakes and it makes it very satisfactory to find a solution at the end.

I think the hardest part of my job is helping students to adapt to the style of learning that’s required in university, which for a lot of students is different to what they are familiar with from school. From the beginning of first year in college, we have our engineering students working on practical design projects that don’t only have one correct solution. They need to learn to rely on themselves to figure out what they need to learn and do research to find the knowledge. I like explaining things to people, but I have to hold myself back a lot to let them learn how to teach themselves! That will make them much more independent and effective engineers in the long run.
