Student Winners – March 2018

After every event we ask the engineers and moderators to select the students who stood out for them; the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats.

Well done to all of the student winners, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there could only be one winner in each zone. So, for fantastic engagement during the event, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winners below will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher.

February – March 2018 Winners blog posts

After every event we ask the winning engineers to write a short post to be sent to all the students who took part in the zone. It’s the perfect way for the engineers to reflect on the previous two weeks, thank all the students for voting for them, and talk about how they plan to use their €500 prize money. If you’re an engineer keen to experience the ‘best crash course in scicomm’, apply now for the next event, at iaeie.ddev.site/engineer-apply   Eimear Tuohy, University College Cork, Space Zone It was great being able to share my knowledge and experience with such enthusiastic and interesting students. I hope that all of the engineer’s answers have helped you identify what aspects of science and engineering you could study in the future. I hope we inspired you and cleared up any concerns you might have had about engineering. And to be honest, all of … Continue reading

February 2018 Zones

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 26th February to Friday 9th March 2018 during Engineers Week, connecting school students with engineers across Ireland. We are running three themed zones. Read about them below, or head straight to the application form: Teachers apply: iaeie.ddev.site/teachers Engineers apply: iaeie.ddev.site/engineer-apply Space Zone Look up at night and you will see a whole lot of space out there. With less than 70 years of sending things into space under our belts, the future up above is almost limitless. In this zone, engineers might be designing spacecraft that map and explore distant planets and stars, helping us understand more about the universe. Or they could be using data from orbiting telescopes to monitor the logging of rainforests. They could even be making sure the satellite that carries your phone signal survives its shaky trip into orbit. The Space Zone is funded by Science … Continue reading

March 2017 Winners’ Blogs

After every event we ask the winning engineers to write a short blog to be sent to all the students who took part in their zone. It’s a great way for the engineers to reflect on the previous two weeks, thank all the students for voting for them and talk about their outreach plans for the prize money. Let’s take a look at what the March Winners had to say… David, Health Zone I’m really happy that I took part in the contest; it gave me the opportunity to talk to people around the country about the work that engineers do. I sincerely hope that the people we talked to now have a better idea about what work as engineer is like, and that a few of them will have been inspired enough to think about becoming engineers themselves. Engineering paves the way for the future of our planet, and it’s so … Continue reading

March 2017 Zones

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 6th to Thursday 16th March 2017. This March, during Engineers Week, we will be running three different themed zones. Read about them below, or if you want to jump straight to the application: Teachers apply here: iaeie.ddev.site/teachers Engineers apply here: iaeie.ddev.site/engineers-apply. Energy Zone Energy is vital to our modern world. Some fridges can consume the same amount of energy as 25 large power plants produce every year. That’s a lot of energy just for keeping your food cool. And Google uses around 0.013% of the world’s energy – enough to continuously power 200,000 homes (remember that when you’re next googling your homework!). Where does all this energy come from, and how can we use it better? In this zone engineers might be designing sustainable energy systems, extracting fossil fuels in more environmentally friendly ways, creating innovative projects to reduce carbon emissions, … Continue reading

February 2016 Winners’ Blogs

After each event we ask the winning engineers to write a short blog that is sent to everyone who took part in their zone. It’s a chance for them to reflect on their I’m an Engineer experience and thank the students for their questions and votes. Let’s take a look at what the winners of February’s zones had to say… Conor, Coding Zone The last two weeks have been fun haven’t they? Sounds a bit weird saying that an engineering Q&A was fun… But I really did have a blast speaking with you guys and answering your questions. As some of you know, I spent the first week of the chats in Sao Paulo, Brazil. And it’s funny because looking back on the trip, probably the thing that I enjoyed most was getting up early to see what questions you guys asked and to take part in the chat rooms. I enjoyed it so much I … Continue reading
