February 2015 – Boole Zone

After our first I’m an Engineer event last November, and thanks to funding from Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme, I’m an Engineer comes back to Ireland in February! During Engineers Week, from Monday 2nd to Friday 13th February, we will be celebrating the bicentenary of George Boole’s birth with the Boole Zone. George Boole was an mathematician, philosopher and logician. He worked in algebraic logic, and was appointed as the first professor of mathematics at University College Cork in 1849. We are looking for five engineers who use Boolean logic in their work, to answer questions online, and chat with curious students all around Ireland. As engineer David said “I was very impressed with the questions, which covered all kinds of aspects of engineering and science as well as what it’s like to actually be a working engineer.” Apply now to take part! Apply before Friday 9th January. Teachers Teachers apply here: iaeie.ddev.site/teachers We’ll send an email out soon after you sign up asking … Continue reading

I’m an Engineer November 2014: Who’s taking part?

I’m an Engineer is coming to Ireland for the first time during Science Week this November. From the 10th to 21st November, 10 engineers will be competing for school students’ votes in two weeks of fast-paced live chats and questions on everything from renewable energy, to robots, and pizza toppings. For the latest news and announcements, find us on Twitter, @IAEGMOOH, and follow the hashtag, #IAEIE. Let’s meet the scientists and schools taking part… Energy Zone The Engineers Raymond Alcorn | University College Cork Figuring our how to get our energy in the future. Laura Tobin | University College Dublin As an optical engineer, I work in the dark shining different types of light (Xenon, LED, lasers) onto different types of materials to see what happens – e.g. making holograms or shining lasers on different dyes that I use in my biomimetic solar cells. November 2014 Zones

With new funding secured for our events in Ireland from SFI’s Discover Programme, I’m an Engineer will be running for the first time in Ireland during Science Week this November (10th–21st). We need engineers who are keen to talk about their work and find out what school students think about engineering. This is your opportunity to tell them how they can apply what they learn in their Maths, Technology, Design or Science classes to the real word. As Matt Maddock, a previous I’m an Engineer UK participant, put it: If you get any joy from explaining the world, or think you might have some aptitude for it, then don’t hesitate to apply! In case you need more convincing, members of Engineers Ireland can earn up to one day’s Continual Professional Development (CPD) by taking part. Keep reading for details of the zones, or if you want to jump straight to … Continue reading

Ireland’s Call for Engineers

Engineers have always been welcome to take part in I’m a Scientist, but that doesn’t do justice to the fact that there are probably more engineers than scientists in the country. And that since schools often don’t teach “engineering” there is less opportunity for schools to understand this essential discipline. I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here! works in the same way as its older sister. Five engineers CHAT with students, answer the questions ASKed, and compete for VOTEs to win a €500 prize. This November 10th – 21st we are running 2 zones, during Science Week. We’ll announce what the themes are in September. In the UK we’ve run a wide range: Space, Detection, Transport, Water, Energy, Health. What do you think we should run in Ireland? What’s next? Engineers! We need engineers who are keen to talk about their work. We’re not looking for the glamorous gigs or … Continue reading
